Professor Shinichi Usami of our department has compiled the results of his many years of research into genetic analysis of hearing loss into a book titled "Molecular Diagnosis of Deafness" published by Springer Nature on January 8, 2026.
This book is covering the basics of genetic medicine for hearing loss, such as the mechanisms of inheritance and the onset of hearing loss, and methods of genetic analysis using next-generation sequencers, this book also provides a clear overview of current genetic status of genetic diagnosis for hearing loss, organizing the major genes that cause hearing loss into chapters based on their expression site and function in the inner ear. The book also uses numerous illustrations to provide a comprehensive explanation of current genetic medicine for hearing loss. Furthermore, by including case studies and describing the clinical characteristics, treatments, and outcomes of each gene, the book makes it easy for general otolaryngologists to visualize the cases, making it useful for actual clinical practice.
